This is the final version of the Night Gaunt illustration. I decided to put a surprisingly different take on the creature with the nib at the belly button-place. The eyes instead of the nipple were a first hint in the process of the work, that I´d take some freedom here in defining the creature in my very own way. However, if it wouldn´t be a personal work, I´d have painted whatever you´d ask me to do, but I find this is a very nice thing that gives the recipient a smile at the second view on it.
Other than that, the outer “glow” is defined more precisely and some hint of wetness is applied on the skin with some standard brushes set to spread.
Another hour of sketchy refinement went into this. Now with two adjustment layer, one for gradient overlay and another for just coloring with magenta, this way its so easy to play with colors. It seems like I´m having a crush on violet / blue / green contrast;-) Still way to go I´m not happy with the belly.
Long gap in update here, because I was busy with other things. Tried a new technique when approaching the coloring in this sketch and I´m quite happy of the result for a 20 minutes work. Basically I work on one layer for the base color and on one for lighting and shadows which can be switched with the shortcut “x” in Photoshop easily -> another timesaver.
Just reactivated my account here to basically update with just works in progress, random sketches, doodles, concepts and visual ideas.
Attached you see my idea of H.P. Lovecraft´s Night Gaunt in an early stage of coloring, hope I find the time to work more on this soon.
